One such gem in the crown of India’s scenic beauty is Gandikota, also known as the Grand Canyon of India.

Located in the Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh, Gandikota is a small village that sits atop a gorge that has been carved by the Pennar River.

The word “Gandikota” means “gorge fort” in Telugu, and the village derives its name from the 13th-century fort that stands guard over the gorge.

The fort was built by the Reddy dynasty and served as a stronghold for various rulers over the centuries.

However, the real attraction of Gandikota lies in the spectacular canyon that lies below the fort.

The Pennar River has carved out a gorge that stretches for nearly 10 kilometres, with a width of up to 300 meters and a depth of over 100 meters.

The steep cliffs on either side of the gorge are a sight to behold, with layers of red and brown sandstone creating a mesmerizing pattern.

The canyon is especially stunning during sunrise and sunset when the light reflects off the rocks and creates a breathtaking display of colours.

Apart from the canyon, Gandikota is also home to several other attractions that are worth exploring. The fort itself is a marvel of architecture, with multiple gates, temples, and palaces.

Gandikota is also known for its natural beauty, with several waterfalls, streams, and lakes in the vicinity. The Belum Caves, one of the longest cave systems in India, is also located nearby and is a popular tourist attraction.

To reach Gandikota, one can take a train or bus to the nearest town, Jammalamadugu, and then hire a taxi or take a local bus to the village. The best time to visit Gandikota is between November and February when the weather is pleasant and mild.
